Fleets like tracking products

Despite the sluggish economy, fleets seem to be willing to spend on tracking technology. Two recent purchases illustrate this trend. Despite the sluggish economy, fleets seem to be willing to spend on tracking technology. Two recent purchases illustrate this trend.

Herndon, VA-based Vistar Datacom has sold a trailer tracking system based around its GlobalWave MT2000 to Coastal Pacific Xpress (CPX), a refrigerated carrier based in British Columbia, that operates a fleet of 160 trucks and 250 trailers. CPX plans to track and monitor 200 refrigerated truck trailers carrying fresh fish and other perishable foodstuffs within North America via Vistar's GlobalWave devices.

Ownings Mill, MD-based Aether Systems said Cypress Truck Lines, a Jacksonville, FL-based flatbed carrier, will deploy 250 additional MobileMax units. Cypress will have a total of 400 of the wireless systems in use.

The two deals reflect the growing acceptance of automatic vehicle location (AVL) systems by trucking companies. In 1999, the market for AVL technology topped $500 million and may reach $1 billion by 2004, according to a study by the Strategis Group of Washington, D.C.
