Frito-Lay, a division of PepsiCo, has signed a contract with Qualcomm to install more than 1,100 integrated OmniTRACS and OmniExpress mobile communications system units, and 4,400 TrailerTRACS asset management system units in 2002.

"We are ensuring that Frito-Lay has a fully integrated mobile communications solution that enables them to address their need to provide customers with better services while improving trailer utilization," Qualcomm Wireless Business Solutions president Chris Wolfe said.

The MVPc in-vehicle computer interfaces with the OmniTRACS and OmniExpress mobile communications systems. In addition, the system will enable Frito-Lay to manage its distribution resources and performance data in real-time, while ensuring regulatory compliance.

Qualcomm said the tracking solution will assist the company in optimizing fleet utilization, improving safety and reducing environmental impact through analysis of detailed vehicle fuel performance. QUALCOMM will initially equip over 1,100 Frito-Lay trucks and 4,400 trailers, and it expects to deploy 1,100 additional MVPc computers in the next year.
