High-speed wireless Internet access is now available at select Flying J and Petro Stopping Centers facilities under an agreement formed with SmartStop Wireless Solution.

Using the 802.11 standard, known as Wi-Fi, the Travel Plaza Alliance Network has already installed “hot spot” connection points in about half of their locations.

Truck drivers can log on to the Internet with laptops and other devices equipped with Wi-Fi wireless modems just by entering one of the hot spots and registering with the system.

Wi-Fi is quickly becoming a standard for mobile Internet access in consumer markets, offering interoperability and relatively low hardware costs. New versions of the standard are also expected to greatly increase data communication speeds.

The alliance partners hope to expand the wireless network by including other trucking service providers.
