The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has set up $1 million in cost-sharing agreements with the Minority Institutions of Higher Education to conduct transportation and technology research.

Eleven historically black colleges and universities will be involved in a variety of transportation research projects, such as the construction of highway subsurface drainage systems, rural road safety, flexible pavement materials, and improving bridge structure security.

"Research is key to improving highway safety, reducing environmental impacts and alleviating traffic congestion," said Mary E. Peters, administrator of the FHWA. "The cooperative agreements announced today reflect our ongoing commitment to more fully utilize the tremendous resources at our nation's renowned minority institutions to help us fulfill our research goals."
