LOUISVILLE. Truck-Lite introduced its newest 12-volt product here at the Mid-America Trucking Show, declaring it the world’s first 7-in. round DOT-compliant LED headlamp for commercial applications.
According to John Howells, vp of sales for The Americas, forward lighting by a 12-volt LED headlamp results in brighter, crisper and whiter light output than incandescent alternatives as well as the longer life and greater dependability that has become expected of LED signaling and marking products.
Howells said the 7-in. round LED headlamp features solid-state circuit board assemblies for unrivaled shock and vibration resistance and hard-coated polycarbonate lenses that offer 30 times more impact strength than glass.
The U.S. Armed Forces have acquired more than 100,000 Truck-Lite 24-volt, 7-in. round LED headlamps since they were released in 2007 for use on both new and existing wheeled and tracked vehicles deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The LED headlamps have also undergone extreme weather testing at military installations in Panama, Arizona and Alaska with exceptional results, noted Howells. He said the new 12-volt white LED headlamps meet or exceed all applicable DOT requirements pertaining to headlights, which he said are one of the most difficult standards to achieve. According to Howells, Truck-Lite developed a “perfect blend of thermal management and light output to produce an aesthetically pleasing beam pattern through innovative precision optics.”
The new LED headlamps are designed to replace any standard 7-in. round headlight within 12-volt applications and can be aimed using standard mechanical aiming equipment. Made in the USA, each headlamp uses ten high-output LEDs as its light source, with a light output brighter than traditional glass beam headlights, which results in better visibility.
While a typical headlamp may be rated to last as little as 1,200 hours, Truck-Lite LED headlamps are expected to exceed that by as much as 50 times, said Howells. He added that the LED technology used in Truck-Lite’s headlamps offer improved visibility over conventional incandescent lamps as the color temperature of the assembly is rated around 5000K—making it far closer to sunlight than incandescent or halogen lamps.
