In response to increased industry and government interest in truck security, Qualcomm has introduced a number of new features and options for its OmniTRACS mobile communications system.

A driver authentication feature requires drivers to log in with a unique ID and password over the OmniTRACS system before they can operate a vehicle. The logins are validated over the air by matching the entries to a secure database at Qualcomm's Network Management Center.

While the company has offered an in-vehicle panic button for some time, a new wireless version will allow drivers to activate the alert while they are outside of their truck. Pressing either version of the panic button sends a high-priority call for help to both the message center and fleet dispatch operations.

The third new security feature from Qualcomm is a tamper detection option that alerts fleet managers and drivers if any attempt is made to disable a vehicle's OmniTRACS satellite transceiver.

The wireless services company has also announced a new interface for ALK Assoc.'s FleetCommander tracking and route optimization software. Combined with OmniTRACS' real-time vehicle-location information, the ALK software package can monitor trucks as they travel their routes and automatically alert a fleet if a vehicle leaves its planned route.
