Walter B. McCormick Jr. resigned as president and CEO of the American Trucking Assns. (ATA) to take a position as head of the U.S. Telecom Assn. beginning July 1. Three other ATA executives are also leaving the trucking group to work with McCormick at U.S. Telecom. William Canary, senior vp-state and intergovernmental affairs for ATA, has been appointed the organization's interim head.
CFI (Contract Freighters Inc.), Joplin, MO, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The $321-million-plus revenue TL carrier, which started with two trucks and three employees, now operates over 8,000 tractors and trailers and has 2,900 employees.
United Parcel Service was one of three companies to receive the Ron Brown Award for Corporate Leadership from the Dept. of Commerce. The award, which is named in honor of the late Commerce Secretary, recognizes organizations for their outstanding achievements in employee and community relations.
The Propane Education & Research Council has unveiled its “Exceptional Energy” award for fleets that use propane as an alternative power source for gasoline and diesel fuel. The award is also designed to raise the awareness of the growing use of propane as a motor fuel. The council points out that propane is the power source for about 350,000 vehicles on the road today. The first six fleets to win the award are: Schwan's Home Delivery, Marshall, MN; Danone Waters of North America, Pasadena, CA; Northside Independent School District of San Antonio, TX; Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, FL; Texas Dept. of Transportation; and Yellow Checker Star Cab Co., Las Vegas, NV. At a recent meeting, ATA's Technology & Maintenance Council elected Jim Salas, manager of vehicle specifications, applications and engineering for Ryder, as its new general chairman and treasurer. Duke Drinkard of Southeast Freight Lines was elected vice chairman and meetings chairman, and Thomas Newby of Old Dominion Freight Lines was elected chairman of study groups.
