Skytel is targeting the fleet market with a new automated vehicle location (AVL) service that will operate over its national wireless data network. Originally built for paging, the private network is land-based and currently supports a variety of two-way messaging and telemetry services.
The new tracking service, FleetHawk, uses a compact transceiver that can be remotely mounted in a vehicle for completely automatic monitoring, storage and transmission of vehicle operational data. A variety of input options will allow SkyTel to add other functions such as sensor monitoring or two-way messaging in the future, according to the company. Retail price for the hardware bundle is $349.
Monthly charges for wireless service will range from $16.99 to $39.99 depending on fleet requirements for frequency of location updates and system features.
A Web-based management application allows fleets to view vehicle locations as well as set boundary or operational alerts with just a basic Internet connection, and an enterprise solution is also available for integration with exiting fleet dispatch applications.
Vehicle information can also be routed to SkyTel messaging devices, PC-based email addresses or cell phones.
