TAMPA, FL. Chevron Products Co. is boosting the lifespan of its patented Delo Extended Life Coolant (ELC) to eight years or 750,000 miles and to 15,000 hours for off-road use, without the need for chemical additives or extenders.

At a news conference here at the annual Technology & Maintenance Council meeting, Carmen Ulabarro, coolant marketing specialist said if a Chevron chemical extender is added to the coolant at 500,000 miles, 10,000 hours or the four-year mark, the coolant could last for a million miles, 20,000 hours, or eight years.

“What truck operators want is a low-maintenance coolant that can last for the entire time they own their truck,” she said. “With our reformulated Delo ELC, you just need to check the coolant’s freeze point every two years to make sure it’s protecting down to between minus 12 and minus 62 Fahrenheit, topping it off as needed with a 50/50 coolant-water mix, and making a visual check of coolant to see if it’s still red and that there’s no debris in it.”

Chevron expects the reformulated Delo ELC will not only last longer under the higher heat loads generated by 2007 low emission engines, but also help the company expand its market share among truck owners.

“It’s tested well in EGR engines. So we think we’re prepared well to handle 2007, though we won’t know for sure until we get it in some of the ’07 engines and see what happens,” Ulabarro said. “As engine technologies advance, higher operating temperatures are becoming the norm. So Delo ELC’s reformulation boosted heat transfer capabilities, reduced electrical conductivity and improved corrosion protection.”

The reformulated version of Delo ELC goes on sale next month without a price increase over the previous formulations it replaces.
