David Abney has been named COO of United Parcel Service and Alan Gershenhorn has been promoted to replace Abney as president of UPS International.

Abney also assumes the presidency of UPS Airlines, replacing John Beystehner in that role, who retired last week after 36 years of service. As COO, Abney will be responsible for international operations, U.S. package operations, global transportation, labor and all freight activities.

Meanwhile, Gershenhorn will remain based in Brussels, Belgium, where he previously headed the operations of UPS Supply Chain Solutions in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. With his promotion to president of UPS International, Gershenhorn joins UPS’s Management Committee. It is comprised of the corporation’s 12 most senior executives who oversee day-to-day operations at UPS.
