The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) is pushing the Canadian government to develop and promote intermodal-friendly policies in order to build a freight transportation network that is "more sustainable over the long term."

Speaking at the Toronto Railway Club, RAC president & CEO Bill Rowat said intermodal systems are the only way to go if Canada is to have a sustainable transportation system in 2020.

"It is time for governments to consider rail and intermodal systems as integral to the transportation systems of the future," he said. "The bottom line is for policy makers to stop thinking narrowly in terms of only roads and highways, and to think in terms of what is possible."

Rowat said Canada is facing major challenges in terms of international trade benefits, global warming challenges and the threats of terrorism. RAC represents 55 railroads that move 6-million carloads and containers of freight annually, along with 51-million passengers.
