Truckload carrier Trism Inc. has announced plans to exit the general freight and hazardous waste markets because those areas of service have caused the company to be unprofitable over the last two years. The company said it plans to concentrate on its profitable heavy haul, government munitions, commercial explosives and radioactive waste businesses.
As part of this effort, the company has reached agreements with Mercedes-Benz Credit Corp. and its other equipment lenders to reschedule certain equipment payments and to return excess tractors. The company operates a pool of more than 1,300 tractors and over 4,000 trailers throughout North America.

Trism said it also plans to reduce operating costs by selling excess trailers, closing several terminal facilities and eliminating non-driver personnel. Bill Culbertson, Trism’s COO, will be in charge of this downsizing effort, the company said.
