Montreal-based rail giant Canadian National plans to install supply-chain management technology that will offer Internet shipment tracking, tracing, and management capabilities for paper products moving throughout North America on both its system and on other modes of transportation.

CN’s new Internet system, provided by IntelliTrans of Atlanta, GA, is designed to provide paper mills the ability to track traffic on CN’s rail lines, estimate times of arrivals for shipments, and provide intervention capabilities to manage shipments that are off-schedule. The system will be available starting in the first quarter of 2002, said CN.

The agreement between CN and IntelliTrans would allow CN customers to monitor and manage individual paper rolls across multiple transport modes and warehouses. This would link all supply-chain participants and provide a single point for inventory information, whether the shipment originated on CN or another carrier and whether it is located in a railcar, truck, ship, port, terminal or warehouse.
