AB Volvo says its Volvo Powertrain division will invest in and expand its Hagerstown, MD, engine plant over the next four years to accommodate production of its next-generation diesel engine family for Volvo and Mack, the company's two North American truck brands.

The 1.5-million sq.-ft. Hagerstown plant, which employs 1,200 people, has been producing Mack engines since 1961. The facility's one-millionth engine recently rolled off the production line.

The Volvo truck engines currently in operation in North America are built at Volvo Powertrain's plant in Sk^vde, Sweden. According to Leif Johansson, president and CEO of the Volvo Group, “This decision represents an important commitment to the North American truck market.”
