The El Paso County Commissioners Court is considering a $2.5 million project that will decrease air pollution from diesel trucks idling overnight in the Interstate 10-Horizon Boulevard area.

The project, to be paid for with a $2 million Texas state grant and $500,000 from IdleAire Technologies Corp. of Knoxville, Tennessee, calls for the company to install and operate 250 units at three truck stops that will provide heating and cooling, electrical, computer and telephone service to drivers who park overnight at Travel Plaza, Petro Stopping Center and Love's Travel Stop.

The Texas Department of Transportation estimates the IdleAire units will cut about 11,000 tons of pollutants from the air annually and save 1.6 million gallons of diesel fuel.
