New Penn Motor Express said today it has been selected to replace A-P-A Transport as the preferred carrier to continue providing service to its former customers. The agreement was negotiated as a result of A-P-A Transport's decision to discontinue operations.

A-P-A Transport president Armand Pohan said yesterday that the North Bergen, NJ-based LTL carrier would shut down after 50 years in business.

"Unfortunately, our lending institution has now advised us that it would not provide us with the critical additional financing we have requested to weather the storm," Pohan said in a statement posted on the company's website. "That was our last and best hope, and we cannot continue to operate without this financing."

Tuesday is expected to be A-P-A Transport's last day to make freight pickups. To minimize service disruptions for customers, A-P-A personnel will be directing customers to call New Penn for pickups.

"The decision of A-P-A to discontinue operations certainly came as a shock to our industry, and especially to the customers of A-P-A," said New Penn president Stephen M. O'Kane.

O'Kane added that New Penn is in the process of working with A-P-A customers to provide a seamless transition and ensure that they do not experience shipment delays.
