The box at the McDowell Street Post Office will serve as the first test market for the FedEx drop box program at post offices throughout the country. More than 80 drop boxes will be installed at post offices in the Charlotte area this week.
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. will serve as the second test market beginning in April. FedEx plans to begin the national roll-out of the drop box program in July and, over the course of the next 18 months, expects to place more than 10,000 drop boxes at post offices in about 120 U.S. metropolitan areas.
"This is designed to benefit all FedEx Express customers, from small, neighborhood businesses and individual shippers to large, worldwide accounts," said David J. Bronczek, president and CEO of FedEx Express.
FedEx and the U.S. Postal Service have also executed an air transportation agreement that will launch in August. FedEx Express will provide airport-to-airport movement of containers holding Postal Service Priority Mail, Express Mail and first-class mail. FedEx Express will provide air transportation for approximately 3.5 million pounds of Priority Mail, Express Mail and first-class mail every business day.
