ATA honors safe fleets

FedEx Ground, Moon Township, Pa., Central Freight Lines, Waco, Tex., and Ward Trucking., Altoona, Pa., are winners of the American Trucking Assns.' 2000 National Truck Safety Contest.

FedEx Ground, an operating unit of FedEx Corp., representing large fleets, was cited for its extensive safety program, which includes detailed driver selection criteria, comprehensive qualification reviews for new drivers and close monitoring of owner-operator equipment. Central Freight Lines, a midsize fleet that operates in 15 states, has a comprehensive safety package that includes close monitoring of drivers' medical conditions and a requirement that all drivers go through the company's training program, regardless of previous experience. New drivers are given check-rides every 90 days for their first year and annually thereafter.

Ward Trucking, representing small fleets, was recognized for a 42% reduction in the cost of vehicle accidents and a 21% drop in the number of workplace injuries over the past five years.

The three fleets were presented with ATA's President's Trophy at the group's Safety Management Council conference in St. Louis.
