Phoenix-based truckload operator Swift Transportation has hired Robert Cunningham as its new president and COO, also adding him to the board of directors. Formerly vp-sales & marketing for Swift from 1985 to 1997, Cunningham is expected to become the carrier’s CEO by the end of 2005.
Cunningham is in the process of selling off his Arizona truck dealership, Cunningham Commercial Vehicles, as it is a distributor of Freightliner, Sterling and Western Star trucks – brands used by Swift – and would create a conflict of interest for him.
Gary Enzor, Swift’s CFO, is leaving and will be replaced on a temporary basis by William Riley, senior executive VP, who served as Swift’s CFO from 1990 to 2002, until a new CFO can be hired.
Also, Jerry Moyes – the principle owner of Swift – is moving into a new position called the ‘office of the chairman,’ continuing to serve as Swift’s chairman & CEO, but with significant input from Cunningham and Riley on strategic matters. Swift’s board of directors has also appointed Jock Patton as its lead director, to serve as an official liaison between the board and management.
