    Southeastern Freight tries employment screening
    Dec. 30, 2002
LTL carrier Southeastern Freight Lines is installing a screening program for all new hires in attempt to reduce turnover and extend job tenure at the company.

The screening system -- developed by Portland, OR-based Unicru Inc. -- is designed to lower employment costs by screening out unqualified candidates before they are hired. Unicru said its human resource management system -- a system combining software with Internet-based applications -- also helps boost median job tenure among employees 42% by weeding out job applicants that may not be the right fit for the trucking industry.

Lexington, SC-based Southeastern Freight Lines said it hopes to create a more experienced, customer-focused employee base with this new screening system, as well as form a larger pool of qualified candidates for management development. The $400-million carrier currently employs 5,500 at 58 terminals in the southeastern U.S. and handled more than 450,000 shipments in 2001.
