Drivers from Canada and Mexico transporting hazardous materials into the U.S. will not have to undergo background checks until Aug. 10, 2006.

Part of last year’s highway bill (SAFETEA-LU), the background check requirement was originally set to go into effect Feb. 10, 2006.

The Transportation Security Administration published a notice of the extension in today’s Federal Register.

However, TSA does have the authority to set an earlier date for implementing the background checks by issuing yet another notice.
