Class 8 sales up 2% in May

Sales of Class 8 trucks in the U.S. were 2% higher in May than in April, according to information compiled by Ward's Information.

Sales of Class 8 trucks in the U.S. were 2% higher in May than in April, according to information compiled by Ward's Information.

However, the 12,551 Class 8s sold last month amounted to 10% less than those sold in May 2002, when fleets began pre-buying vehicles to beat the EPA '02 emissions standards.

Volvo had a 43% one-month gain in Class 8s sales, with 1,204 sold in May vs. 884 in April. Sales at Western Star were down 22% for the month, with 143 trucks sold.

However, Western Star sold 61% more Class 8s in May 2003 than in May 2002.
