House Gives Initial Approval to Transportation Budget

The House Appropriations Committee gave initial approval to a $59-billion transportation budget that includes $88.2-million for safety inspections of trucks crossing into the United States from Mexico under NAFTA, according to today’sWall Street Journal.

Minnesota Democrat Martin Sabo wants to add legislative language requiring more inspections of Mexican trucks.

According to the report, it also appears likely that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will draw up new rules to raise the government’s fuel-efficiency standard for SUVs and minivans, which is currently 20.7 mpg.
