The new terminal, to be built at an estimated cost of $16 million, will be capable of handling 60,000 lifts annually. While the terminal initially will occupy approximately 50 acres, more than 160 acres of property at the Navy Yard have been committed to support future intermodal and non-intermodal rail operations, NS said.

In the past two years, NS has moved to expand its intermodal service, particularly in Lehigh Valley, at Bethlehem, PA, and has opened new intermodal terminals in Harrisburg, PA; Austell and Savannah, GA; and Cleveland, OH.

Additionally, Norfolk Southern has made substantial improvements to its intermodal terminals in Chicago and has joined with Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway to provide non-stop intermodal service between California and Harrisburg, PA.
