USFreightways Corp. has started a campaign to assist with relief efforts in New York and Washington and provide scholarships for children of deceased members of the Armed Forces. USFreightways will match every dollar donated to this campaign by an employee up to a maximum company contribution of $500,000, including an immediate donation of $100,000 to establish The USF Disaster Relief Scholarship Program, a scholarship fund to assist children of deceased members of the Armed Forces.

If employee participation warrants, a review will be held at that point to consider additional corporate matching funds.

In a letter to all USFreightways personnel, company president & CEO Samuel K. Skinner said that a corporate-wide voluntary payroll deduction process is being established to make it easy for employees to contribute. Employees may also make an immediate one-time donation and designate that the funds go to the American Red Cross or to the USF Disaster Relief Scholarship Program.

"Feelings are running high in the United States at the outrageous terrorist acts. Anger and sorrow have enkindled a level of patriotism and pride that has not been seen in a long time,” said Skinner, who served as Secretary of Transportation under President George Bush. “But many of us have also experienced great frustration at not being able to take more solid action. Financial aid, blood donations and support of the economy are the means we can use right now to help bring America back on balance."
