Negotiations begin this week between the United Auto Workers and Caterpillar with both sides hoping it will not be a repeat of the six-year contentious impasse that led to the current agreement which expires on March 31.
Caterpillar officials say they are optimistic; the UAW has declined comment.
Industry observers suggest that both sides might be more willing to compromise this time because of increased global competition for Caterpillar products and, at the same time, a dwindling UAW membership. Talks are scheduled to begin on Wednesday.
