ORLANDO, FL. - Here at the National Truck Equipment Assn. Work Truck Show,DaimlerChrysler Vans LLC displayed a refrigerated version of its Freightliner Sprinter Class 2-3 commercial van.
Engineered by one of the OEM’s preferred suppliers, Germany’s Kerstner GmbH, the reefer van package boasts insulation provided by polyurethane rigid-foam formed parts adapted to the vehicle’s inner contours. The ABS paneling used is highly resistant to impact, according to Kerstner marketing manager Reto Heil, and installed without rivets or screws, making it easier to keep clean and remain hygienic for food transportation. In fact, as Heil, pointed out, the inside of the van looks just like a household refrigerator.
Another key feature is the waterproof welded-aluminum floor pan , designed for long service life and resistance to steam jets as well as forklifts. Heil also said there is very little reduction in loading capacity since the formed parts are self-supporting and don’t require a wooden or metal frame. In addition, he said the reefer conversion is completed in such a way that original operating elements (such as doors) are unaffected.
The Kerstner Cool Jet 201 reefer unit features CFC-free coolant and an integrated evaporator that keeps the cargo bay free of intrusive components. The unit is controlled and monitored from a dashboard display.
Heil noted that among the first U.S. customers for the Kerstner-reeferized Sprinter is the famous Memphis-based Corky’s BBQ chain. And DaimlerChrysler Vans marketing communications manager Robbyn Fulk noted the model on display in Orlando was sold on the floor the first day of the show.
