Cummins Westport Inc. has announced that it will introduce certified low-emissions natural gas engines into the European market starting next year. Cummins Westport expects that the first of its European-certified engines will be the C Gas Plus, an 8.3-liter natural gas engine boasting up to 280 horsepower.
The firm plans to submit the C Gas Plus for certification to Europe’s Euro III standards in the spring of 2002. For the two most sensitive urban emissions, oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), Cummins Westport expects that next year the engine will approach the stringent Euro V requirements mandated for large commercial vehicles in 2008.
Before the end of 2002, Cummins Westport also expects to certify its 5.9-liter natural gas B5.9G to Euro III standards. The B5.9G provides up to 230 horsepower. In addition, Cummins Westport expects to bring to Europe its other engines now under development, including natural gas versions of the Cummins diesel 8.9-liter L, the 15-liter ISX and the 10.8-liter SM.
