Waste Management, Inc., in partnership with air quality and community groups, in New York has demonstrated urea-based emissions reduction technology, dubbed Elim-NOx, in its vehicles operating in Brooklyn and the Bronx. Six vehicles will be retrofitted under the program.
The Elim-NOx system adds liquid urea into the exhaust, which forms ammonia. The ammonia is then mixed with NOx and passes through a catalyst in the exhaust pipe, turning the NOx into water and nitrogen.
“This NOx reduction technology has the potential to enable us to retrofit existing diesel equipment in a minimum amount of time, cost-effectively and with little or no disruption to our operations,” said Waste Management market area engineer Tara Hemmer.
