The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has announced the establishment of a medical review board, under the recently passed highway bill, which will be charged with advising the agency on health issues related with commercial vehicle operators.

The Secretary of Transportation will appoint five physicians to the board to begin work for fiscal year 2006. Applications must be received by Oct. 30, 2005.

The board will review all current FMCSA medical standards and propose new standards and guidelines aimed at better ensuring physically capable commercial vehicle operators are qualified. Additionally, the board will develop an educational curriculum for training medical examiners who certify commercial vehicle drivers.

The notice was posted on the Federal Register on Oct. 3 [No. FMCSA-2005-20105]
