Truckers moving through the Niagara Falls region can expect heavier than normal traffic and potential detours for commercial traffic this weekend due to increases in seasonal tourism and special events being held throughout the region in conjunction with Canadian Civic Day on Monday, August 6. In preparation, the Peace Bridge Authority and Niagara Falls Bridge Commission have issued contingency plans for commercial traffic crossing the Peace, Lewiston-Queenston and Rainbow Bridges.
Both private and commercial traffic is also being encouraged to adjust Friday through Monday (August 3-6) travel schedules to avoid peak times at all bridges from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for Canadian-bound traffic, and from 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for U.S.-bound traffic.
In the event of heavy traffic congestion around the Peace Bridge, the I-190 Exit 9 ramp to the U.S. Plaza will be closed to commercial vehicles. Canadian-bound commercial carriers will be directed past the Peace Bridge’s ramp entrance to enter the U.S. Plaza at Vermont St. Southbound drivers should follow normal traveling directions.
For the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, commercial carriers should use the normal I-190 approach; access to the Rainbow Bridge in downtown Niagara Falls is also unchanged. Vehicles with CANPASS are advised to use the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge.
