Richmond, British Columbia-based SmarTire Systems Inc. has rolled out a new tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) for commercial vehicles that features a new highly sensitive, weatherproof, controller area network (CAN) chassis-mounted SAE J1939 receiver.
SmartTire said the new receiver combined with the firm’s high-pressure sensors results in a “technically advanced TPMS” for use by manufacturers of commercial trucks, buses, agricultural and construction vehicles. The company said the new product is currently being tested by several OEMs.
"This system is not an adaptation of a passenger car product but has been designed specifically to satisfy the demands of the commercial vehicle market," said Erwin Bartz, vp-business development. "This TPMS integrates effectively with in-vehicle displays and monitors both tire pressure and temperature. The new system allows commercial vehicles to achieve improved fuel economy and tire life in addition to minimizing tire fires and unscheduled downtime due to tire problems."
