DOT’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) have launched the Metropolitan Capacity Building (MCB) program and accompanying Internet site to help improve responses to transportation challenges in metropolitan areas.

The MCB web site provides information on a broad array of planning topics, said DOT, including a briefing book for metropolitan planning organization board members, case studies, training information, and links to other relevant sites.

"Metropolitan areas face enormous challenges, such as congestion, air quality, financial constraints, growth issues and diverse traveler needs," said Mary Peters, FHWA administrator. "The Metropolitan Capacity Building program will help elected officials and transportation professionals meet these challenges and design and operate transportation facilities that meet the needs of the American public."
