Long-haul carrier Celadon Group Inc. said today that it would benefit from President George W. Bush's decision to allow Mexican trucks free range on U.S. highways.
"We have anticipated this move and are positioned to execute our operational plan to utilize Mexican drivers for hauling freight between Mexico and the U.S.," said CEO Stephen Russell. "We also believe we are uniquely qualified to benefit from the lifting of the moratorium based on our freight flows to and from Mexico."
A coalition led by the Teamsters has asked a federal judge for an emergency stay of Bush's decision, citing clean air issues.
Trucking companies in Mexico said they are worried that they will lose business to U.S.-based companies, while U.S. truckers fear they will lose loads to Mexican truckers.
Celadon has run a Mexican affiliate since 1995.
