The State of Michigan is getting an award from the Foundation for Pavement Preservation, a non-profit consortium of industry and government groups, for its efforts to reduce road construction and maintenance costs.
The state saved an estimated $700 million maintaining the condition of its roads through "pavement preservation" techniques. Michigan uses a preventive maintenance program for the upkeep of its roads, applying various surface treatments early in the life of a road to reduce the rate of wear and tear and extend the road's overall service life.
The Foundation's research shows that for every dollar spent on pavement preservation, state COTs save at least six in road rehabilitation and reconstruction.
