Schneider National Inc. and Swift Transportation Co. Inc. have selected Qualcomm’s TrailerTRACS for their Global Positioning System (GPS) trailer-tracking capabilities.

Phoenix-based Swift will deploy TrailerTRACS across its entire fleet, which currently includes approximately 30,000 trailers. That number will grow to 45,000 if Swift's previously announced proposed merger with M. S. Carriers is approved and completed.

"Adding TrailerTRACS to our fleet will further increase our trailer productivity," said William Riley III, CFO of Swift. Riley added that Swift already uses Qualcomm’s OminTRACS communication system.

“While we’re still in a development and testing mode, we’re very pleased with what we’ve seen, and we will continue to work toward a solution that will set the standard for asset tracking management,” said Scott Arves, COO of Wisconsin-based Schneider.

Arves said it wants to use TrailerTRACS to improve customer service, increase asset efficiency and utilization, and improve asset visibility. The company expects significant productivity and efficiency gains for its 43,000 trailers by linking trailer location and status data directly to Schneider’s fleet management and logistics systems.

Wireless communications and sensor technologies in each trailer will detect whether it’s connected or disconnected from a tractor, if it’s loaded or empty, as well as determine its position.
