Fleet Owner has been named as a winner in the prestigious 51st Annual Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Awards for “Lockdown,” a series of three feature articles that ran in the May, June and July 2004 issues.

Competing in the category of “Best How-To Article or Series of How-To Articles,” “Lockdown” examined the complex security issues facing trucking in terms of anti-terrorism requirements, changes in border-protection systems and cargo-theft deterrence. Following the conventions of the how-to approach, each article in the series offered clear steps to lead readers through the process of evaluating current security needs and establishing programs to meet future requirements.

Fleet Owner editors named winners of the award were David Cullen, executive editor; Larry Kahaner, Washington editor; Jim Mele, editor-in-chief; Wendy Leavitt, director of editorial development; Sean Kilcarr, senior editor; Marilyn Wilson, managing editor; Dan Zeis, senior art director; and Yodit Tesfaye, associate art director.

The American Business Media's Neal awards, established in 1955, have been called “the Pulitzer Prize of the business press” and are intended to recognize editorial excellence in business-to-business publications. This year, Fleet Owner was one of just 22 final award recipients in the competition, chosen from 1,168 entries.
