At last month's Chicago Auto Show, DaimlerChrysler rolled out the new high-output Cummins turbodiesel engine that will power ‘03 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty 2500/3500 Series light trucks.

According to Cummins, the powerplant will be the most powerful diesel available in a light truck. The 5.9-liter engine produces 555 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,400 rpm and 305 hp at 2,900 rpm,, said the engine maker, yet dramatically reduces engine noise.

The high-output diesel incorporates a new high-pressure, common-rail fuel system, which injects a small amount of fuel to starts combustion before the main “power-producing” fuel charge is injected.

Cummins noted that this pilot injection provides starting capability similar to gasoline engines.

In addition, according to the engine maker, it uses 30 to 40% fewer parts than most V-8 diesels, making for greater reliability and durability. The new engine will be offered in the ‘03 Ram Heavy Duty, slated to begin production this summer at DaimlerChrysler's St. Louis North and Saltillo, Mexico, plants.
