FedEx installs electronic scanners

The $20-billion parcel delivery giant said that it is using customized Bell & Howell scanners in conjunction with VirtualReScan software and Adrenaline boards by Kofax to capture and report in real-time information to customers. The system will also help FedEx improve its operational planning, the company said.

FedEx said this scanning technology provides image-enabled, Web-access to documentation on all international shipments, which will reduce delays associated with customs clearance paperwork and eliminate the need for country-required physical documentation in the clearance process.

FedEx said it has installed 500 imaging systems so far and plans to have another 200 in production by September. The company added that it plans to have nearly 900 high-volume production scanners from Bell & Howell in service by April 2002.
