FedEx opens new MD ground hub

FedEx Ground, the small-package ground carrier subsidiary of Memphis-based FedEx Corp., has opened a new 325,000-sq.-ft. distribution hub employing 400 on 114 acres outside Hagerstown, MD.

This is one of nine new hubs FedEx is opening as part of a ground network expansion plan that includes the relocation or expansion of more than 290 pickup and delivery terminals through 2010.

The $70-million hub is capable of processing up to 22,500 packages per hour. It is equipped with advanced package-sorting technology, including high-speed conveyors and camera-based scan tunnels.

This summer, FedEx Ground opened hubs in Cincinnati, OH, and Dallas. A fourth new hub under construction near Memphis, TN, should begin operations in 2006. This should boost the company’s current average daily pickup capacity by nearly 70% over the next five years, said Daniel Sullivan, president & CEO of FedEx Ground.
