Volvo joins anti-idling project

Volvo Trucks North America will participate in a demonstration of mobile idle reduction technology (MIRT) systems for heavy-duty trucks. Volvo will partner with North Carolina Solar Center at North Carolina State University in a two-and-a-half year program funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the SmartWay Transport Partnership.

Volvo will engineer a cost-effective installation kit for MIRT systems that will be installed by Volvo during the assembly of the truck. Volvo will also verify the MIRT connection to the truck’s shore power system and ensure broad compatibility with such systems.

The OEM has agreed to install the prep kits in at least 20 trucks. Volvo and NCSU will obtain data on operator and fleet usage of the systems during the program. Volvo will leverage its Volvo Link two-way satellite communications system for some of the data collection. The company will also recruit customer fleets to participate in the program.
