Larry Orr Endowment at Seattle University

This week, Seattle University announced that Larry Orr’s wife, Carol, has established a scholarship endowment called the “Larry Orr Endowment” at the university to honor his memory.

According to the university, the scholarship will be disbursed to mechanical engineering students “to help defray their expenses to attend Seattle University, allowing them to excel in their own efforts as engineers.” Larry Orr served as a Project Center Liaison at Seattle University, helping students gain experience on real-world projects.

Larry Orr, a former chief engineer at Kenworth Truck Co., died in May 2001. He is perhaps most remembered for his leadership role in the development of the aerodynamic Kenworth T600A, for which Orr and his engineering and design team were awarded the DOT’s National Award for the Advancement of Motor Vehicle Research and Development. He worked tirelessly on a number of other ideas as well, however, to make trucks safer and more productive.

The Seattle University Board of Trustees oversees the management of endowment funds, which are a vehicle through which donors can help provide support in perpetuity for students, faculty members and educational programs. Expenditures from established endowments begin when the principal reaches $100,000. According to Seattle University, donation checks can be sent to the address below. Please write “The Larry Orr Endowment” in the memo line. Credit or debit card donations may also be made by calling the Academic Development Officer directly.

According to Kenworth, parent corporation PACCAR Inc. has also agreed to match, at a one-to-one ratio, gifts of $100 to $5,000 from eligible PACCAR employees and former employees.
