A recent report from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance stated: “Pushrod stroke indicators that are able to show the condition of brake adjustment to a person who is adjacent to the vehicle are perhaps the single most meaningful change that can be made to improve brake compliance.”

To that end, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems now offers the SureStroke Indicator, which eliminates the need for truck operators to crawl under each wheel to check pushrod adjustment.

The Indicator, which is available in two versions — one for power units, trucks and buses, and one for trailers — consists of a metal bracket that bolts onto the brake chamber, a premeasured reference unit that attaches to the bracket, a replacement clevis pin, two yellow pin covers that establish the acceptable limits for stroke length, a red clevis pin pointer attached to the slack adjuster, and various hardware.

If the brakes are adjusted properly, the red pointer pin will align with the center of the rear yellow marker when the air brakes are applied between 90-100 psi.

Bendix notes that the indicator enhances safety by ensuring that proper braking capacity is available in both normal and emergency situations and promoting balanced braking, which can reduce the risk of jackknifing and excessive wear on tires.
