ExxonMobil plans to unveil two engine oils later this month that meet the American Petroleum Institute's new CI-4 heavy-duty engine oil classification, which is designed to address the performance requirements of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) engines.

These engines are designed to meet federal regulations governing the amount of particulates and NOx allowed in diesel exhaust; stricter standards go into effect this October. The Commercial Vehicle Lubricants division of ExxonMobil will market the new CI-4 oils as Mobil Delvac 1300 Super and Exxon XD-3.

ExxonMobil says the oils handle the higher temperatures of EGR engines, as well as the higher soot levels that can occur when exhaust air is put back into the combustion chamber. Mobil Delvac 1300 Super, which will be released to the market first, also features increased anti-wear additives for longer drain intervals, better piston deposit control, and greater resistance to oxidation, which can thicken the oil and lead to increased wear.
