European bus manufacturers EvoBus GmbH, Mercedes-Benz Omnibusse and MAN Busse are going to start offering Anaheim, CA-based Iteris’ Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system as an optional feature for vehicles used primarily for long haul travel.

Designed for both the U.S. and European commercial vehicle market, Iteris said its system should be available on European buses starting in May 2005, the market is estimated to total 7,000 vehicles per year, the company said.

“This is one more example of how vehicle manufacturers realize the safety and financial benefits of using lane departure warning technology,” said Jack Johnson, Iteris’ president & CEO. “After commercial trucks and passenger cars, we believe the bus market is a natural next step for widespread LDW deployment.”

Introduced in 2000, Johnson said Iteris’ LDW system is now in use on over 8,000 commercial trucks in Europe and the U.S.
