Canada’s truck drivers’ hours-of-service rule will be published in the Canada Gazette [www.canadagazette.gc.ca/partII/index-e.html]on Nov. 16, and will go into effect on Jan. 1 2007. The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) anticipates the new regulations will include 13 hours daily driving, a 36-hour reset, 48-hour averaging of off-duty time, and cycles of 70 hours in 7 days and 120 in 14.

Additionally, the sleeper berth component of the rule is expected to be similar to the U.S. regulation before it was changed last month.

“It’s taken us twelve years to get to this stage,” stated David Bradley, CEO of CTA. “But we finally have a regulation that incorporates scientific principles and at the same time attempts to accommodate the needs of drivers and carriers.”
