Cummins Inc. said it plans to immediately add 140 positions at its Columbus, IN engine plant to help meet demand for its turbodiesel engine used in the Dodge Ram light truck.

Cummins last month announced it would consolidate its heavy-duty engine assembly and test operations into its Jamestown, NY, engine plant by closing engine assembly operations in Columbus during the first quarter of 2003.

Workers who lost their jobs may be transferred to the new positions in Columbus. However, a report in the Evansville Courier & Press said the new positions would come with a pay cut and a loss of seniority.
