In the first major consolidation move since it’s acquisition of Mack Trucks and Renault V.I., Volvo Global Trucks has announced that it will close the Mack Winnsboro, SC, plant within the next 15 months. The plant, opened in the mid 1980s, produces Mack’s Vision and CH on-highway vehicles.

At the same time, Volvo Global said it will also eliminate duplication between Volvo Trucks North America (VTNA) and Mack by consolidating some support functions.

Winnsboro, the Mack Macungie, PA, plant and Volvo’s New River Valley, VA, facility are currently operating at only 30% capacity, according to a press statement released today.

In a statement released to employees, VTNA president Michel Gigou said Winnsboro production would be shifted to New River Valley but remain Mack-branded.

Asked if the plant closing would lead to the end of Mack on-highway operations and position the company as a construction/vocational brand, VTNA spokesperson Susan Alt said, “It’s too early to tell.”

The support consolidation will involve “backroom functions,” according to Alt, and is intended to cut costs for the North American operations. Mack will stay in its Allentown, PA, headquarters building “for now,” she said.

Both Mack and VTNA will continue to maintain separate headquarters and management teams, according to today’s press release, although it did not specify where those headquarters would be located.
