The National Motor Freight Traffic Assn. (NMFTA) has just released ClassIT, a new online version of the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) used to classify all the commodities shipped and handled by motor freight carriers in North America.

NMFTA said that carriers using NMFC in a structured program can more accurately forecast costs to their customers while increasing profitability, while shippers using it could better understand the basis for freight pricing. ClassIT is the online version of the NMFC that adds in a variety of additional features:

  • several online search parameters to speed up information location
  • easy navigation allows users to see entire product groupings to ensure the proper description and class
  • synonyms to allow users to customize and individualize ClassIT by typing familiar, commonly used terms to existing commodity names and numbers
  • a density calculator for packages, pallets or complete shipments
