    The Port of Oakland (CA) has awarded TIAX, a product and technology development firm, a contract to replace older heavy-duty diesel trucks that service the port with newer lower-emissions vehicles. The Port will provide up to $1.5 million to replace about 60 trucks.

    Commercial truck owners may be eligible for a grant of up to $25,000 toward the purchase of a 1999 or newer truck if their older vehicles meet the following criteria:

    1. Model-year 1987 or older;
    2. Has operated continuously in the Port for the past two years;
    3. Has hauled containers for at least 400 trips over the past 12 months.

    Drivers who live in the Port’s local communities may receive preferential consideration.

    TIAX implemented a similar fleet modernization program in the Los Angeles area, in which 350 trucks were replaced. That project is expected to eliminate 1,000 tons of emissions over the planned five-year life of the project.
